Project Spotlight: Ladybug Hideaway (Port St. Lucie, FL)

In the heart of Port St. Lucie, FL, a unique public art installation has taken root, transforming an urban space into an immersive experience that invites passersby to reconnect with nature. Titled “Ladybug Hideaway,” this remarkable piece was designed and implemented by renowned local artist Mark Fuller. The installation, composed of towering blades of grass and charming hidden ladybugs, brings a sense of wonder and tranquility to the city, and WGI is proud to have contributed to such an extraordinary project.

Bringing Nature to the Urban Landscape

“Ladybug Hideaway” is more than just a visual spectacle; it’s an invitation to pause, reflect, and engage with the natural world in a man-made environment. Inspired by the vast, peaceful fields of tall grass often depicted in visual imagery, Mark Fuller’s vision was to create a space where visitors could momentarily escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Standing well overhead, the towering blades of grass evoke awe and wonder, encouraging participants to wander through the installation and immerse themselves in its serene atmosphere.

Adding to the magic, each blade of grass features mirror-polished stainless steel on its inner side, reflecting the sky and creating a dynamic, ever-changing visual experience. And, as visitors explore the installation, they are delighted by whimsical ladybugs hidden throughout—contemporary interpretations of the 18 different types of ladybugs Fuller researched for this endeavor. This playful element brings surprise and joy to the act of exploration, making “Ladybug Hideaway” a truly interactive and engaging work of art.

WGI’s Role: Structural Integrity Meets Creative Vision

While the installation captivates with its artistic appeal, it also posed unique engineering challenges in its creation. Each towering blade of grass had to withstand Florida’s unpredictable weather, including strong winds and potential storm conditions—which is where WGI’s Structural Engineering team came in. To ensure the durability and safety of the installation, WGI performed a detailed structural analysis, subjecting each blade of grass to a mathematical model to approximate wind load and stress levels. By assessing how these factors would affect each blade, WGI was able to ensure the installation’s resilience, allowing it to endure Florida’s stormy weather while maintaining the integrity of Fuller’s vision.

This collaboration marked the beginning of a lasting partnership between WGI and Mark Fuller. Through WGI’s exceptional structural engineering services, the team at Functional Arts now considers WGI a vital part of their creative process, looking forward to future collaborations on similar projects.

A Testament to Collaboration and Creativity

“Ladybug Hideaway” stands as a testament to the powerful synergy between art and engineering. It reminds us of the importance of preserving green spaces, even in the midst of urban development, and encourages us to reflect on the delicate balance between nature and man-made structures.

At WGI, we are proud to have played a role in bringing this transcendent installation to life, ensuring it remains a source of inspiration and joy for years to come. As cities continue to grow and evolve, WGI remains committed to fostering projects that merge creative vision with structural integrity, helping to shape spaces that resonate with beauty and meaning.
